Bray Vineyards

California, the most populous state of the United States, located on the Pacific coast of North America is bordered by Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico. California is also the home of wine producing regions such as Santa Barbara and Northern California's Wine Country.

Bray Vineyards is one of the California’s leading wineries that has grown through excellence and quality of wines offered. Bray Vineyards is located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley which is renowned for the fine quality of the grapes grown. The winery was established in 1996 when the land was purchased from an estate agent. The property consists of fifty acres of rolling hills ranging in elevation from 1,100 feet to 1,300 feet. A seasonal creek crosses the property with mining excavations off the creek from the Gold Rush days of California.

The north field has a southern exposure and is planted with 7.25 acres of Sangiovese. The clone is Sangioveto which produces a fruit-forward wine. The wines are planted on a rocky hillside with a vertical shoot positioned trellis. The wines are trained to a unilateral cordon facing north for even sun exposure. After verasion, all fruit not fully colored is dropped with the target production at 3.8 tons per acre. Leaves are pulled from the east side of the wines to allow thorough sun exposures in the morning but remain shaded in the afternoon.

The eastern top hillside is planted with 3 acres of Barbera. The scion wood was cut from decades old Shenandoah Valley wines. The wines are also vertical cordon, head-trained in the Italian tradition producing excellent quality grapes. Cabernet Sauvignon is planted on the terraces directly behind the winery. The height of the stakes and cordon wire is adjusted so that the canopies are close to the same height as the terraces drop.

Winemaking at Bray Vineyards in Shenandoah Valley is a dynamic process where diversity is created by tailoring vinification and cellar practices to the individual vineyard lots. Nevertheless, there is a crucial process that defines their idealistic approach and establishes a reference for maneuvers exclusively suited to each fermentation lot. Bray Vineyards’ goal is to extract and retain all of the color and flavor that is delivered in the grapes with quality taste that soothes the mind.
