Chateau Montelena

Chateau Montelena is one of the famous wineries in California that has grown through years of excellence and quality of the wines offered. The discovered history of Chateau Montelena began on a chilly fall morning when Alfred Tubbs spaded over and inspected the soil where he thought of planting estate vineyards. A deal was struck and in January of 1882, the San Francisco entrepreneur owned 254 acres of rugged land just two miles north of Calistoga at the base of Mount Saint Helena.
The Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Montelena Estate Zinfandel are grown in one of the world’s most exclusive winegrowing properties. The site’s variety of soils and slopes translates directly into the layers of complex flavors in wines. The Estate vineyard is comprised of varied terrain, from flat to steep hillsides.
Instead of chemical products, Chateau Montelena use only sustainable, organic farming methods to promote the health of the soil and ultimately preserve the land’s productivity. For example, instead of using chemical pesticides, they combat destructive pests by growing cover crops and releasing ladybugs into the vineyard. Their vineyards are blessed by natural underground hot springs that warm the soils, creating a naturally frost-free environment during the growing season. These vineyards also have well-drained gravelly loam soils that create excellent growing conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, with ripening patterns controlled by drip irrigation.
