Domain Chandon

California, the most populous state of the United States, located on the Pacific coast of North America is bordered by Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico. The four largest cities are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco. California is also the home of and wine producing regions such as Santa Barbara and Northern California's Wine Country.

In 1743, Domain Chandon was founded by Claude Moet in Champagne, France. Later on its vineyard acreage totaled to 1,000 acres in Napa and Sonoma's Carneros and Napa's Mt. Veeder and Yountville. More than 250 years of sparkling winemaking experience and ancestors who defined innovation helped to form today's Domain Chandon, which continues the tradition of discovery and passion for great winemaking. Chandon's pioneer heritage dates back to the actual invention of champagne.

In 1690, a French monk by the name of Dom Perignon stumbled upon a wine with a magical sparkling effervescence while acting as cellarmaster of a Benedictine abbey in Hautvillers. Domain Chandon acquired the Benedictine Abbey and its legacies and named one of their champagnes as Dom Perignon after the monk who started it. In 1973, Moet Hennessy required growing locations in the Napa Valley, which supported their commitment to producing the finest American methode champenoise sparkling wine. They found it in Mt. Veeder, Carneros an undiscovered region cooled by bay breezes, and the Yountville location they call home.

The wine grapes of California are the European species Vitis Vinifera. Cultivation of these grapes has been traced back 5,000 years, and winemaking from their wild ancestors, extends back even further. The traditional varieties of Vitis Vinifera used for the production of French champagne are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier. All of these ripen early, which is necessary in the short, cool, growing season of the Champagne region of France.

To ensure the continuity of style and quality that has made Chandon one of America’s classic sparkling wines, their Brut is blended with ten to twenty percent Reserve wines from prior harvests. Domain Chandon’s goal is to extract and retain all of the color and flavor that is delivered in the grapes with quality taste that soothes the mind.
