Albany
California is the most populous state of the United States. Located on the Pacific coast of North America, it is bordered by Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico. California is known for its pleasant climate and ethnically diverse population. The name California is most commonly believed derived from a storied paradise peopled by black Amazons and ruled by Queen Califia. Albany is a city in Alameda County, California in United States. The population was 16,444 at the 2000 census. The city has a total area of 14.2 square kilometers of which 4.4 square kilometers is land and 9.7 square kilometers is water. The city lies in the northwestern corner of Alameda County, bordered by the cities of El Cerrito and Richmond on the north and the city of Berkeley on the east and south sides. The terrain is mostly flat which rises to 338 feet above sea level. The population was 15,994 according to 2005 census. In 1909, voters changed the name of the city, primarily to distinguish the city from the adjacent section of Berkeley which had previously been named as Ocean view. On the basis of vote, the city was renamed in honor of Albany, New York, which was the birthplace of the city's first mayor, Frank Roberts. In the city the population was spread out with 22.9 percent under the age of 18, 7.1 percent from 18 to 24, 34.9 percent from 25 to 44, 24.1 percent from 45 to 64 and 11.1 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 87.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.7 males.
