Calexico
California is the most populous state of the United States. Located on the Pacific coast of North America, it is bordered by Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico. California is known for its pleasant climate and ethnically diverse population. The name California is most commonly believed derived from a storied paradise peopled by black Amazons and ruled by Queen Califia. Calexico is a city in Imperial County, California, United States. The population of the city was 27,109 at the 2000 census. It is part of the El Centro, California Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is a border town that is adjacent to Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico. Calexico is about 122 miles east of San Diego and about 70 miles west of Yuma, Arizona. The area of the city is 20.38 square kilometers, out of which 20.38 square kilometers is covered by land. The population of the city as of 2005 is 32,600 and its density is 1599.23 per square kilometers. Calexico began as a tent city of the Imperial Land Company and has grown into a larger thriving city on the U.S. Mexico border. Calexico was founded in 1900 and incorporated in 1908. Although it gained a reputation for a while as a typical U.S. Mexico border town with all the cheap aspects usually associated with such places, the modern city of Calexico is a far cry from what it was back in those early days. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.1 square kilometers, all covered by land. Calexico is located 230 miles southeast of Los Angeles, 125 miles east of San Diego, 260 miles west of Phoenix, Arizona, and adjacent to Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico. In the city the population was spread out with 34.9 percent under the age of 18, 9.9 percent from 18 to 24, 27.1 percent from 25 to 44, 17.6 percent from 45 to 64, and 10.4 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.6 males. Calexico, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited places. It is also said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origin back to prehistoric times.
