As of the census of 2000, there were 20,718 people, 7,956 households, and 5,513 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,492.0 per square kilometers.


The Millbrae Transit Station serves as a major transit hub for the Peninsula, connecting the BART, CalTrain, and SamTrans networks. Millbrae's economy is driven mainly by its long strips of hotels.
